An ode to the natural world

an original new performance work with First Nations storytelling from Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island)

SAND is a collaboration between Belloo and long established performance ensemble Taikoz to produce an original new performance work that centres on First Nations storytelling from Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island). Daniel Belton (Good Company Arts, NZ) is a long-term collaborator of Belloo’s and will be creating sensitive art projection for the work. Redland Performing Arts Centre is joining as a production partner to support the premiere production on Quandamooka land.

SAND explores our planet’s shifting sands and oceans and is an ode to the natural world, exploring the elemental forces of nature and celebrating the beauty of impermanence. It will be an original and highly engaging performance fusing ongoing cultural connections to land, music, story and physicality.

Come closer to the sand’s ebb and flow
and you’ll see each grain is different
Belonged once to something proud and separate
now joined together
matter that can be poured from hand to hand
No countries
no borders
no animal mineral vegetable
just sand

With the work’s emphasis on landscape and environment, SAND will feature sophisticated intercultural elements and uniquely blended art forms, in an original poetic work built with a sensitivity to regional place.

creative developments and premier 2022 - 2024

Co-Artistic Directors, Caroline Dunphy and Katherine Lyall-Watson, made two trips to Sydney in early 2022 for our collaboration with the Taikoz performance ensemble.

Taikoz then travelled to Brisbane to work with Belloo’s actors and team over the Easter long weekend with the support of Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).

Now with Redlands Performing Arts Centre (RPAC) on board as SAND’s venue presenter, Belloo Creative, Taikoz and Good Company Arts will be delivering this new, dynamic collaborative project to present on Quandamooka Country in June 2024.
